Rio de Janeiro's TIM Music Festival

Brazilian mobile company TIM will be holding its annual festival this weekend at Marina da Glória in Rio de Janeiro. The line up or Rio includes the Joe Lovano Nonet, Cecil Taylor, Björk, Katia B, Cibelle and Juliette and The Licks. Here is the full schedule with ticket prices:

Celebrate Latin America in September

We will be taking a few days off over the upcoming long weekend. If you are in the Bay Area, here are a couple of Latin American-themed events worth checking out as September approaches...

Favela Rising, the award winning documentary about one group that revolutionizes life in the slums of Brazil through hip hop music, will be playing at the Red Poppy Art House on September 1st. (8pm, show is free).

San Francisco's own Brazilian Independence Day Celebration will be taking place on September 9th in Golden Gate Park. Much like it's New York counterpart, this festival will feature live bands, tasty food, arts and crafts, and of course, dancing.

Lulacruza, a duo from Argentina and Columbia, will be making their debut on September 15th at the Red Poppy Art House. Their sound is described as South American instrumentation, found sound objects, and field recordings blended into a vibrant, electronically manipulated aural experience.

Tango No. 9, known for their modern tango nuevo, will be performing pieces from their new album, Radio Valencia, to be released in October. Click here to catch a sneak preview, or see them live on September 21st at the Red Poppy Art House.

Live Earth in Rio de Janeiro Carries on

It almost didn't take place, but at the last minute a local judge gave the green light and an estimated 400,000 people made their way down to Copacabana Beach to enjoy the free entertainment. The concert started ahead of schedule (an unusual occurance in Brazil) with an unexpected opener from Brazilian pop singer Guilderme  Arantes who sang an appropriately named 'Planeta Agua'. The act was followed by a variety of other performances including Macy Gray and Samba legend Jorge Ben Jor. The event was closed by Lenny Kravitz who piped in with a few words in Portuguese. Live Earth in Rio de Janeiro is Back On

It has been touch and go for the past few days, but the Live Earth organization announced yesterday that Rio de Janeiro's concert will go on as planned.

The 7/7/07 Concert for a Climate in Crisis (to raise awareness of climate change) is taking place in 8 cities worldwide (New York, London, Johannesburg, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney and Hamburg). Rio is the only one where no admission is charged. The line-up includes Lenny Kravitz, Pharrell Williams, Macy Gray, Xuxa, Jorge Ben Jor, Jota Quest (Brazilian rock), Vanessa da Matta, O Rappa (hip-hop), MV Bill (rap/hip-hop) and Marcelo D2 (samba/hip-hop).

Earlier this week the concert had been cancelled due to concerns that there was not enough local security on hand for the event. The city has been overwhelmed with the preparations for the upcoming Pan-American games. However, the local authorities have reviewed the situation and the event will go on as planned.

Spanish Harlem Orchestra at Toronto's Luminato

Toronto's Luminato, a festival of arts and creativity involving music, dance, theatre, film, literature and visual arts, launched this past weekend.  The much-awaited opening of the Royal Ontario Museum's Michael Lee-Chin crystal, an ultra-modern addition to the classical façade of Toronto's largest museum and brainchild of Daniel Libeskind, was allegedly attended by an estimated 40,000, for a somewhat deflating free concert and opening ceremonies.  The planners clearly hadn't expected such a large crowd, as people found themselves wandering back and forth behind the stands where a select few managed to score seats, trying to find a way in.

Better planned is the free concert series, Masters of World Music, at Harbourfront Centre.  A great selection of local and international artists are performing at the spacious and accessible open-air stage.  Don't miss Joe Vasconcellos from Chile at 8pm and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra at 9:30pm tonight.  Lila Downs with Mesoamerican sounds and K'naan of Somali Canadian origins for a taste of hip hop hit the stage tomorrow night.

Canadians Rock the Fillmore with The Sadies and the Tragically Hip

Monday night was a very special event for Canadians here in the Bay Area: The Tragically Hip performed at the Fillmore with the Sadies. A big thanks to Mike Belitsky and Alon for making it even more special and getting us back stage to watch the show.  Canadians reading this post will understand how cool this is because the Hip are one of Canada's biggest bands (and a bit of a cult in the Bay Area since no one south of the border knows who they are). Americans reading this post will understand how cool this is because the Fillmore is a legendary venue that has hosted the likes of the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding and many, many more (you can see an entire chronology by checking out the old concert posters that adorn the Fillmore's walls).

20th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert

This weekend was the 20th annual Bridge School Benefit Concert – one of our favorite events in the Bay Area. The Bridge School is an institution for kids with severe physical impairments that was founded by Pegi Young.  Unbeknownst to many, musical genious (and fellow Canadian) Neil Young and his wife Pegi, have a son Ben, who suffers from such impairments. After shuffling Ben through a variety of public schools 20 years ago, Pegi opened the Bridge School to accommodate Ben and other children like him.

Pulling from their vast selection of musically-inclined friends, Pegi & Neil threw together a first-class event featuring some of the world’s most talented performers to raise money for the school. There was one hitch – the performances had to be acoustic, a novelty in pre-MTV Unplugged days. Past line-ups have included seasoned musicians such as Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Simon & Garfunkel. The acoustic requirement was harder for some than others - as Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl pointed out, the first time they played Bridge School, in 2000, they had no idea what they were doing.

Bridge School students and their parents get first class seating on stage while concert-goers fill the field that surrounds the Shoreline’s outdoor amphitheater with blankets and picnics. Repeat performers like Dave Matthews and Eddie Vedder get to know the students and always seem to genuinely look forward to reconnecting with them.

This weekend was another star-studded performance with picture-perfect weather featuring Neil Young, Pearl Jam (Eddie Vedder’s 14th year at Bridge School), Dave Matthews Band, Brian Wilson, Foo Fighters, Trent Reznor, Death Cab for Cutie, Gillian Welch and Devendra Banhart. Neil Young opened the show and snuck in a duet with Pegi; Pearl Jam pleased the crowd with some old favorites; and Dave Matthews showed up once again with a croaky throat (last year he claimed he’d been partying in Vegas, this year he gave no excuse but still sounded great). It’s a sign of the times (and that we’re getting old) that we had to Google Trent Reznor’s name on our phone before realizing he was the front man from Nine Inch Nails. He’d left the band behind fearing they’d never pull off an acoustic set, and instead undertook a first-time performance with a string quartet.

The most entertaining part of the evening is the experience of seeing these musicians mingle and jam together. Neil Young inevitably joins his guests for a song and thrilled the crowd when he joined Dave Matthews on Cortez the Killer. It was almost as memorable as Ben Harper’s Indifference duet with Eddie Vedder a few years back. The traditional closing features the entire cast in a closing number. This year was an explosive rendition of Rockin’ in the Free World.
