Emergency Plan for Machu Picchu

For the past few weeks, visits to the Inca Sanctuary of Machu Picchu have been taking place in a more fluid manner. The National Institute of Culture (NIC) in Cusco has recently implemented an emergency plan to improve the efficient flow of tourists in the wake of the Citadel’s election as one of the New Seven Wonders.

The director of NIC-Cusco confirmed the development of new circuits, as well as the design of five new exit routes to avoid visitor congestion. This plan also includes further training of the staff and tourist guides on the latest research work done in the area.

In the first six months of 2007, Machu Picchu was visited by 247, 608 tourists, which represents an increase of 12% over the same period in 2006.
