Rules To Travel By
I promised my mother that I wouldn't blog about the 'wrong turn onto a railroad track' incident she subjected us to on our way to Healdsburg this past weekend. Instead I thought I would recommend this article - Behold, the Ten Travel Commandments - in celebration of her independent travel experience to California during US Thanksgiving. The article, from Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper, provides some tongue-in-cheek, yet useful tips for travelers. A couple of my favorites that I had pointed out to her before she embarked on her journey:
- Speaking of friends, avoid making new ones on airplanes: She learned this one the hard way on her last visit
- Carry a snack: The flight from Ottawa is timed just wrong so that you barely have time to grab your luggage off the conveyor belt to dash through customs only to throw your bag back on the belt and dash to your connection (there are no direct flights from Ottawa to San Francisco). There is rarely an occasion that I don't arrivestarving because I didn't bring a snack.
- Bite the bullet and buy an upgrade: This was already arranged (she has lots of unused points)
- Accept and consume all complimentary booze: This is a given in my family and is a much easier task when you take advantage of the upgrade
One tip that I hadn't considered, but will remember for next time: Don't expect to be dropped off or picked up from the airport
