More Trains to Machu Picchu

A second private railway company could start operations next March providing alternative transportation for visitors to Machu Picchu. Andean Railways, whose main shareholder is the American railway company Pacific Holdings, will compete with Perurail (Orient Express), currently the only private operation in this business.

Andean Railways, which will operate under the name of Machu Picchu Train will cover the route from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu, initially with four freight cars, eventually expanding its capacity to twelve cars. The rumored investment of US$ 4.2 million will increase the transportation capacity by 50 passengers per car (200 per trip initially). This may be a welcome addition for weary travelers who don’t plan their trip to Machu Picchu in advance. However, the extra traffic may prove detrimental to this world-famous monument.

Carmen Leiva, General Manager of Andean Railways, said they are only waiting for OSITRAN (a regulating body) to approve a few changes on the regulation of the access to the railway to start their operations. As for the price of their tickets, she said they’re still debating on this issue.
