Halloween in Peru
Like many other places
in the world, the influence of American culture on the night of October 31 can be perceived in almost
all big districts of Lima and Peru’s other main cities. Hundreds of children dressed in costumes walk
around in groups asking for sweets as night falls.
All over the country,
more intense celebrations for the young adults take place, whether at a
Halloween party – usually big ‘rave’ parties in the most exclusive clubs - or by
celebrating the ‘Dia de la Cancion Criolla’,
a celebration for the typical music from the coast –such as marinera, festejo
and Peruvian polka - which takes place in the traditional ‘peñas’, were the
best local musicians encourage you to sing and dance to the rhythm of criollo guitars, castañuelas and the world renown Peruvian cajòn.
November 1 is a notable religious holiday throughout the different regions of
Peru. People go to church early in the
morning and take flowers on a ‘visit’ to their love ones at the local
cemeteries. In the Andes, people take
bands and food in a symbolic gesture of sharing with the souls of the
dead. In some of Northern Peru’s
villages, families go to the main square, taking their children dressed in
their nicest outfit. There they gather
with those who have lost a child, young nice or nephew who will look for kids
who resemble the lost one, giving them all sorts of candies wrapped in finely
decorated bags called angels or wawas – quechua for ‘babies’.
