Peru – One Month Later

One month after the earthquake that shook the nation of Peru, Pisco and its surrounding areas are gearing up for reconstruction. The streets in Pisco are still covered with almost 700,000 tons of debris, while its inhabitants are slowly getting basic services restored, such as water and electricity.

Although we can already see a slight improvement and a lot of help is arriving internationally, relocating families and sending kids back to school (together with appropriate nourishment) are only some of the main problems to deal with. Pisco’s mayor has announced that the damages caused to the sewerage system could generate a sanitary emergency if not repaired in the next few weeks.

In the past month, more than 1, 950 people – mostly children – have received psychological treatment to overcome the emotional impact of the earthquake Respiratory and dermatologic problems have also plagued victims.

The department of Ica holds important mining, textile and fishing companies, in addition to being a famous tourist destination. Paracas National Reserve, one of the most visited in Peru suffered the loss of its most emblematic geological formations, including

La Catedral.

Peru’s Tourism & Foreign Trade Minister announced that the Nazca area was not affected by the earthquake and is in perfect condition to receive tourists. As for Pisco, she proposed the possibility of building a theme park and a museum, honoring the famous namesake Peruvian drink PISCO produced in the area, as a creative way to attract tourism back to this area.
