Luxury in the Amazon
Last Sunday's New York Times Travel section featured an article on the Brazilian Amazon, pointing out the transformation that is taking place to accommodate travelers who want adventure with a bit of comfort. The author, who has been traveling to the area for 30 years, provides a great run down of the new options in Manaus, which is Brazil's central hub for travelers to the Amazon. Among the recommendations are:
Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge
Amazon Riverside Hotel
Pousada Uacari
Ariau Amazon Towers
Tiwa Amazonas Ecoresort
The author also points out a travel fact that people often overlook. Manaus is a remote part of the country, making it difficult and expensive to obtain food and supplies. So we tread lightly when using the word 'luxury' -- it's all relative. Although these resorts are a step above historic options in the area, travelers should not expect to find the Four Seasons. This applies to most other accommodations throughout Brazil and Latin America.
More great news for OTR travelers: TAM Airlines now offers a direct flight (5 hours) from Miami to Manaus. You no longer have to fly all the way to Sao Paulo or Rio and backtrack to get there.
