Travel Warning For Peru

Peru is now going through what is certainly the most difficult political time since Alan Garcia took office.  The Peruvian Public School Teachers Union (SUTEP) is protesting against an education reform proposal that would require them to pass periodic competency exams, an indispensable requisite if you consider that February’s tests results showed almost half of public school teachers cannot solve basic math problems and one-third are deficient in reading comprehension.

This strike has been joined by regional protests from other public institutions such as the Union of Construction workers (CGTP) and the Union of Transportation Workers, who have blocked roads, thrown stones and destroyed and burned private property all around Peru in a radical way to protest Garcia’s proposal and his forgotten campaign promises. Cusco, Peru’s main tourist destination, had 16 people die in an accident as a result of the road blockage, and Perurail (Orient Express) has been forced to stop train operations in Cusco and Puno.  Therefore, until Sunday, no tourists or locals will be able to visit Machu Picchu, ironically elected one of the New Seven Wonders only a week ago.

The military is now working hand to hand with the National Police in order to stop the riots and regain peace and order in the country. We will keep you updated on the situation.
