Find Your Boho Mojo

An article in the New York Times Travel Magazine this month discusses the escalating trend of travelers seeking 'boho chic' destinations. The author points out that sleepy little towns around the world are increasingly being exposed and turned in to travel hotspots. The Mayan Riviera is a great example of an area that, in recent years, has become overwhelmed with travelers. Today, 5-star hotels are in the works to accommodate the needs of jetsetters who want a piece of the action. I've written earlier about a similar trend in Peru's Sacred Valley.

Not surprisingly, one destination that the author chose as the next 'it' spot, is the town of Cafayate in Salta, Argentina. He describes it as "a casual mix of Napa and Sedona...luring corporate cowboys and cowgirls longing for the simple gaucho life with more arts and crafts than a Martha Stewart house...". This may be a bit of an overstatement, but this one-plaza town is a unique cultural find, and is a flourishing part of the Argentine wine industry. Cafayate has some old traditional wineries as well as some new ones that are taking advantage of Argentina's popularity in the wine industry. The town's altitude results in a dry climate with warm sunny days and cool nights. This provides the perfect environment for Torrontes, a dry, white varietal that originated in Spain. While you're there, be sure to explore the surrounding area of the Salta province.
