The Best Way for Travelers to Experience Local Culture
When I travel to new countries, the first stop on my list is the local market. This single destination can tell you so much about the culture of the region you are visiting. Here you will have a first-hand look at how locals live their day-to-day, outside the confines of the tourist regions. By observing the scene you can:
- hear the language as it is spoken and properly pronounced
- view the gestures and habits that are common to the culture
- smell the scents of produce that is common to the area
- absorb the styles and textures of the local fashion
- see the fruits, vegetables and meats that make up the main staples of traditional meals
- taste the local delicacies
Typically the local markets are somewhat off the tourist trail. Getting there will be half the adventure if you choose to do it in the local fashion.
