Big Changes in Peru’s Sacred Valley
It used to be that travelers saw the Sacred Valley through the window of a bus tour or while passing by on the train to Machu Picchu. Today there is a transformation taking place in the area. The Sacred Valley, one of the most enchanting parts of Peru, is becoming a first rate destination. This year three 5-star hotel chains (Explora, Orient-Express and, rumour has it, Aman Resorts) have all purchased land in the area with the intention of building world class resorts.
These developments are not surprising, given the abundance of activities that are now available in the Sacred Valley. In addition to scenic hikes and spiritual journeys, visitors can mountain bike, horseback ride and even raft in the Urubamba River! More and more people are using it as their base to visit both Machu Picchu and Cusco rather than staying in Cusco and trekking out to the Sacred Valley for tours.
