Swimming in Rio's Oceanfront
A representative of FEEMA (the state environmental agency) was asked by a reporter on the Globo news this morning how the public would be informed of the safety and status of the waters. He said that the information is published in the newspapers. How will the many tourists (who don't read Portuguese) and the many Brazilians who either don't buy the newspaper or can't read find out about the health risk??
Well, here's the info in English:
It is not recommended to swim within 24 hours after it rains.
The following beaches have a red (not recommended) status as of this morning:
São Conrado
Leblon
Ipanema
Urca
These beaches are "restricted" with a yellow rating:
Barra da Tijuca (the algae level has gone down)
Copacabana --especially discouraged near Rua Sousa Lima
Leme -- especially discouraged near Rua Aurelino Leal
Here are the beaches that have been given a green (okay) rating:
Prainha
Arpoador
