Machu Picchu among the New 7 Wonders? Have a say.
Which will be the New 7 Wonders of the World? The verdict is out and will be decided on July 7th this year in Lisbon by the New7Wonders Foundation whose mission is to protect humankind's heritage across the globe. Peru is pushing for Machu Picchu to make it to the final list, already among the top 7 contenders, according to this article in CNN. PromPeru, the agency for the promotion of tourism in Peru, will be advertising this to its visitors and residents with the hopes of securing a spot among the top 7. This prestigious classification would not only help boost tourism to the region but also make Peruvians proud of their heritage in the eyes of the world.
The ancient city of the Incas was built in the 1460’s and discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. Located at 2430 m above sea level it was well preserved thanks to the protective jungle that surrounds it. The site is composed of 140 constructions, and the mystery about how the Incas managed to move enormous stones for kilometers without the use of the wheel still remains. They cut stones to fit tightly together to the point of not being able to fit even a knife in between two stones without even employing a mortar. The amount of astronomical significance in their architecture is also astounding and is evidence of a very advanced culture.
Among the remaining 21 contenders for the list of the New 7 Wonders of the World are the Taj Mahal, Angkor, Chichen Itza and the Great Wall of China. 77 contenders were on the first round. Have a say and cast your vote online at www.new7wonders.com.
