Discovering the Heart of Traditional Buenos Aires
Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, can easily be mistaken for a European city. Wandering along the neighborhood streets, surrounded by historical buildings with wrought iron fixtures and fashion boutiques, you may as well be strolling through Saint-Germain des Prés. Often referred to as the 'Paris of the South', Buenos Aires is a port city, which explains why the locals are referred to as 'porteños'.
Today Buenos Aires has all the fixings of a modern city from boutique hotels and trendy restaurants to the Buenos Aires Design Center featuring the latest in interior decor. But if you want a taste of traditional Buenos Aires, head to San Telmo, one of the oldest barrios (neighborhoods) in the city. Displaying cobblestone streets and colonial buildings, San Telmo is filled with churches, museums, cafes and of course, casas de tango (where you will find authentic tango shows). On Sundays, Plaza Dorrego is the focal point where porteños - and tourists - flock to the antique fair. It is a must-see on any itinerary to Buenos Aires.
