Back in Business
Things are looking up since my last post. 24 hours later we had the site back up on a new server. We've switched back to the shared server, which still has its limitations, but is going to be a much more solid system for now. My hunch is that this whole thing happened because the virtual server we had 'upgraded' to was actually a piece of junk. You can imagine the thoughts running through my head when the hosting company told me that the virtual server I was put on 2 weeks ago was an antiquated system and that they had just, 1 day earlier, rolled out new servers with all kinds of bells and whistles that likely would have saved me a few headaches. At any rate, i'm not about to take that chance again.
It is a sick kind of coincidence that just the day before the server crashed I had discovered how to set up automatic backups. Of course the backups are saved on the server, which makes them of little use when the entire server crashes, but my project for this weekend had been to figure out the best way to transfer the files to a safe spot off the server. That's what I get for procrastinating...
Thankfully the programmers had all of the recent files from the move to the new server, so we were able to get those back up pretty quickly. Unfortunately the only database that we have is also from that period, so we're working to get all of the current information restored as soon as possible.
On another note, today is the runoff vote in Peru. I've had to postpone my research trip there with everything that is going on, so i'm missing all the action. I just came across this short, but informative, Forbes article that gives a bit of background on the election and Peru.
Keep your fingers crossed that OTR will be back to where it was pre-crash. For those of you who are doing testing for me, please continue to build up your profiles. For those of you who would like to be added to the list when we launch, please shoot me an email at [email protected].
