No Cash in Guatemala

It started during the first week of December, when Guatemala’s ATM machines started to run out of cash.  The problem according to the Banco de Guatemala, was under control and would be solved within a week but instead the situation worsened and by the end of December some banks had to temporarily close their doors due to the lack of Quetzales (Guatemala's currency).  In cities like Quetzaletenango and Solola, after local agencies announced that withdrawals would only be allowed up to Q.700 (less than $100), police officers had to be called in to calm the growingly frustrated crowds.

Antigua has also been affected by the money crisis and many tourists found themselves standing in line at the ATM’s for hours. Local businesses have reported a strong decrease in sales this holiday season and smaller shops and market vendors that do not accept credit cards have been affected the most.

The situation is supposed to be resolved by mid January when new bills start circulating again (9 million Quetzales will be issued by Banco de Guatemala). In the meantime it is recommended that travelers use their credit cards whenever possible and bring dollars from their home countries as these will be accepted in almost all establishments.
